World War II veteran and Choctaw native honored

Most students of American history know the story of the Bataan Death March during World War II, in the Philippines, but have probably never heard of the Shoe Leather Express, a forced march by American and British POWs in the European theater that took place in 1945. The march began on February 6 and lasted for 86 days and covered 600 miles.

Supervisors deal with opening bids

The Choctaw Board of Supervisors dealt with a number of routine issues in their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, September 3.

The Board opened bids for road gravel and awarded the bid to Bacco of Columbus.

In other action, the Board:

•Voted 5-0 to approve the August jail inspection.

Reeves carries Choctaw County in runoff election

Party runoff elections were held on Tuesday, August 27, with only three races being contested in Choctaw County.

All were on the Republican ticket and there were no local runoffs.

The contested seats were Governor, Attorney General and Transportation Commissioner – Northern District.

Election turn out at about 50% with runoff and general set

Circuit Clerk Amy Burdine stated that voter turnout on August 6 was about average for Choctaw County, with around 50% of registered voters casting ballots.

Voters in District 5 used the new Voting Works machines; this district was the only one in the entire country to use the new machines.
