The Nanih Waiya boys and girls basketball teams lost a couple tough games to Ethel earlier last week, before being swept by West Lowndes on Thursday.
Both the Warriors and Lady Warriors headed into this week’s play seeking their first Region 5-1A wins of the season. NW was set to visit McAdams on Tuesday before traveling down the road to face county-foe Noxapater on Friday.
The NW boys lost to Ethel 67-66 in overtime, before enduring a tough third quarter in a 50-42 loss to West Lowndes. The Lady Warriors fell to Ethel 40-36 and West Lowndes 83-52.
The Nanih Waiya boys actually trailed Ethel 33-17 at the half and 47-37 after three quarters before rallying to tie the game 61-61 at the end of regulation. They were outscored 6-5 in overtime.
Trey McMullan pumped in five 3-pointers to lead the Warriors in scoring with 18 points. He also had six rebounds and three steals. Izaiaha Nicholson scored 15 points and had four boards, while Tyquan McCully recorded 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Ethan Dailey and Rico Moore scored six points each.
Dailey had 10 points and three steals for NW in the loss to West Lowndes, while McMullan had eight points, nine boards and three steals and Nicholson score eight points to go with seven rebounds.
Moore had seven points and seven rebounds for the Warriors, while McCully scored seven.
GIRLS
The Lady Warriors led Ethel 13-10 after one quarter and 23-21 at the half before dropping the 40-36 decision.
Ambria Tubby and I’onnya Coleman scored eight points each for Nanih Waiya, while Taina Thompson and Morgan Mills tossed in seven apiece.
Tubby scored a game high 27 points for NW in the loss to West Lowndes, while Coleman scored 13.
The Lady Warriors, who entered this week with an overall record of 6-8, trailed West Lowndes 27-7 after one quarter of play and couldn’t recover in the 83-52 loss.
