Although The Nanih Waiya boys and girls basketball teams were unlikely to improve their seedings headed into next week’s Region 5-1A Basketball Tournament being hosted by McAdams, both the Warriors and Lady Warriors were looking to pick up momentum as they closed out the last week of regular season play.
NW was set to host Noxapater on Tuesday, before visiting French Camp on Friday.
Ethel and West Lowndes are tied at the top of the boys region standings with 7-1 records, while French Camp and McAdams are tied for third at 4-4, followed by 2-6 Nanih Waiya and 0-8 Noxapater.
Last week’s boys games saw Nanih Waiya fall to West Lowndes 70-41 on Tuesday and McAdams 57-51 on Friday.
Nanih Waiya only trailed West Lowndes 25-22 at the half, but the Panthers outscored the Warriors 18-5 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Trey McMullan and Rico Moore scored seven points each for the Warriors, while Quinton Willis added six. Izaiaha Nicholson claimed eight rebounds to lead NW, while Tylan Glass had five and also took a pair of charges.
Tyquan McCully had a big game against McAdams for NW, scoring 22 pants to go with five rebounds and three steals. McMullan scored 11 points and claimed six boards, while Ethan Daily scored nine.
Glass had six steals and three blocks for the Warriors in the game, while Hagan Halfacre, Nicholson and Shia Moore had four rebounds each.
GIRLS
The Lady Warriors dropped a trio of games last week, and are 7-14 headed into this week’s action.
League-leading West Lowndes took a 46-31 win on Tuesday, while McAdams beat NW 44-31 on Friday. The NW girls then visited J.Z. George on Saturday, falling 52-41.
The game was tight against 1A power West Lowndes, with the Lady Warriors trailing just 19-18 at the half before being outscored 21-6 in the third quarter. Sophomore Ambria Tubby led NW in scoring with 24 points.
NW and McAdams were tied 23-23 at the half, but McAdams outscored the Lady Warriors 11-7 in the third quarter and 10-1 in the fourth to claim the win.
Tubby scored 16 to lead NW, while Taina Thompson tossed in seven points.
The Lady Warriors were also tied at the half against J.Z. George (22-22), before the homestanding Lady Jaguars outscored NW 30-19 in the second half to take the win.
Thompson and Tubby hit for 13 points each for Nanih Waiya, while freshman Morgan Mills scored seven.
West Lowndes leads the girls side of the region standings with an 8-0 mark, followed by McAdams (6-2), Ethel (5-3), French Camp (4-4), NW (1-7) and Noxapater (0-8).
