Nanih Waiya assured itself the fifth seed in both the boys and girls Region 5-1A Tournament that is being played this week in McAdams with wins over arch-rival Noxapater last Tuesday.
The boys won 57-48, while the girls took a solid 52-25 victory.
The NW boys opened region play on Tuesday against host and No. 4 seed McAdams. The winner of that game gets top-seeded West Lowndes at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday in the semifinals, but earns an automatic spot in the opening round of the state tourney which begins on Tuesday.
The NW girls were set to play fourth-seeded French Camp on Tuesday. The winner of that contest faces No. 1-seeded West Lowndes at 4 p.m on Thursday and also earns a spot in the state tourney., The girls games will be played on Monday.
Against Noxapater, the Nanih Waiya boys led 19-3 after one quarter and 24-16 at the half before stretching the lead out to 20 points after three quarters of play.
Trey McMullan and Rico Moore had 10 points and four rebounds each for the Warriors, while Shia Moore had nine points and five rebounds. Quinton Willis tossed in six points and J.R. Coleman five, while Ethan Daily had five rebounds. Tylan Glass had 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Bryan Glass led Noxapater with 15 points, while D.J. Kelly tossed in 10.
The Lady Warriors led Noxapater 15-9 after one quarter of play and 34-14 at the half.
Ambria Tubby scored 21 points for the winners, while Taina Thompson hit for 11, Skylar Eaves eight, and I’onnya Coleman six.
Kaylan Brown scored nine and Rayvyn Wagner eight for the Lady Tigers.
NOXAPATER
The Tigers and Lady Tigers closed out the regular season with losses to West Lowndes, the top-seeded boys and girls teams in Region 5-1A.
The West Lowndes girls won 57-51, while Morgan Duran scored 9 points for Noxapater and Asia Glass hit for seven. Kyle Phillips and D.J. Kelly sacred six each in the Noxapater boys 84-21 setback to West Lowndes.
The Noxapater girls were set to open region play on Tuesday against Ethel. The winner advanced to play No. 2 seeded McAdams at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
The Noxapater boys opened the region tourney against French Camp on Tuesday. The winner moved on to play second-seeded Ethel at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
NANIH WAIYA
The Lady Warriors closed out the regular season with a 37-35 win over French Camp on Friday, while the boys lost to the homestanding Panthers 58-55.
The NW girls led 28-21 at the half, but had to hold on to take the narrow win. Tubby scored 22 points for the winners, while Thompson hit for 11 and freshman Morgan Mills scored the remaining four.
In the boys game, French Camp jumped to to a 22-12 lead after one quarter of play and led at the end of every quarter.
Moore led NW with 17 points and 5 rebounds, while Dailey posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and also had four steals.
Izaiaha Nicholson added 10 points and six boards for the Warriors, while McMullan and Tyquan McCully scored eight points each.
