Corey McCullough knew just what he wanted to do when he signed with Alcorn State University to play football four years ago after closing out his career at Louisville High School.
“My parents and I sat down before my career even started and I talked about achieving greatness,” the senior said on Saturday night following his team’s game against the University of Southern Mississippi. “I wanted to be one of the best to ever do it, and it’s just a blessing for me to accomplish this.”
What McCullough accomplished on Saturday night was becoming Alcorn State’s all team leader in field goals made when he hammered home a 44-yarder in the second half to give him 35 for his career, breaking the tie he held with ASU all-time great Wilfredo Rosales.
“It was one of the goals I had when I signed to play at Alcorn. I wanted to break records and it felt good to get it out of the way in the first game.”
Early in the game, McCullough, who also punts, unleashed a 59-yarder, just one yard short of his career high. McCullough know has his sights set on breaking a record he knows about really well — the single-season mark of 17 field goals made in a season. McCullough set that mark as a sophomore, then tied it last season as a junior.
Alcorn lost the game 38-10, but looks to get back on the winning side of things on Saturday when the Braves host Mississippi College at 6 p.m. Two weeks later the Braves begin defense of their SWAC Championship when they host Prairie View A&M at 5 p.m.
