Nanih Waiya volleyball coach Danya Hunter was quick to Amit that her Lady Warriors learned a lot about themselves and the game of volleyball in a three-set loss to Grace Christian School last week.
“We had an awakening and learned that we had to come play every time,” Hunter said about the match with GCS. “Grace Christian has great servers and a very talented team. We had seen a lit bit of that (good serving), but Grace Christian has six of them.”
The week before the Lady Warriors had picked up a couple wins in a jamboree against other new programs, but that was not the case when NW took on the experienced Grace Christian squad. But Hunter said it was a good experience and all of the rest of the week in practice her squad new exactly where improvement was needed.
“We hurt ourselves with bad first passes,” she said. “In this sport your first pass in crucial. You have to be able to serve and you have to be able to make good first passes.”
NW lost the varsity match 25-13, 25-15 and 25-11. The junior varsity lost in two sets, while the junior high team rallied to win the second set after dropping the first, on the way to a 2-1 loss.
This week Nanih Waiya was set to host Kosciusko on Tuesday and West Lowndes on Thursday. The following week has the Lady Warriors hosting Amory on Monday, Aug. 26 and Kemper County the next day, before visiting Aberdeen on Aug. 29.
