The “Winston Women Farm, Home, and Personal Defense” program kicked off last Saturday with a very determined group of ladies. This program is designed to introduce participants to safety aspects surrounding the aforementioned, but also provide a hands-on experience throughout instruction sessions.
Program format is designed to meet once bi-monthly at the Winston Extension Office and/or the Louisville Sheriff and Police Department shooting range. Yes, that’s right, shooting range. Not only will everyone get to learn farm and home safety, but there will be firearm handling classes each session in which participants can fire their personal defense weapon with expert instruction.
Last Saturday’s program consisted of: Healthy Home presentation by FCS Agent Tracy Gregory which addressed look-a-like hazardous household products that could lead to family members being poisoned accidently, Fireman Kenny Wilson discussing fire prevention in the home, Sheriff Jason Pugh discussing why personal defense is necessary with real-life scenarios, and lastly Officer Barry McWhirter taught participants non-lethal methods of self-defense including: pepper spray, taser-guns techniques and much more.
The program is unfortunately a very needed venture by these community stakeholders, and personal defense is something that everyone should take serious. The take-home message Saturday for our group wisely stated, “The police are only minutes away, but you may need help in seconds.”
Just one parting statement for anyone that may try to harm one of these ladies, “You’ll be sorry!”
Congratulations to these ladies for taking a proactive approach to protecting themselves, and their families.
