Choctaw County School District Superintendent Glen Beard recently announced that the District has gained unitary status, which means they are no longer under the 1970 Desegregation Order.
The Desegregation Order was the result of the 1954 Supreme Court decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case that declared laws dictating racial segregation of public schools unconstitutional.
Beard stated that he knows of only one other school district in the state which has achieved unitary status, that being the Madison school district.
Beard added that this is a huge accomplishment for the District as it now places control completely in the hands of the local School Board, and they no longer must go to court to receive approval for different projects. The move is a testament to the efforts of the School Board and administration and the progress that they have made in recent years according to Beard.
