This past Thursday evening a number of officials from different Choctaw County entities gathered at the Choctaw County Career & Tech Center for the annual Council of Governments Dinner. The dinner was prepared and served by students in the Culinary Arts program under the direction of Ashley Fondren. The dinner gave was an opportunity for different officials to give updates on progress in Choctaw County.
Greg Fondren, representing the Board of Supervisors, reported that Entergy has purchased the power generating plant near French Camp with plans to invest $75M into the facility in the next five years.
Ackerman Mayor Tim Cutts congratulated the Supervisors for keeping taxes low, with Choctaw County having the third lowest millage rate in the entire state.
French Camp Mayor Glen Barlow reported that work is progressing on the new Dollar General which has been given a historic distinction and will be built of brick and wood, rather than the usual brick and metal.
Shuni Coffey, Mayor of Weir, mentioned hopes for their Dollar General to add a produce section which would be a major benefit for the town. She also spoke briefly about the reopening of the library and the importance of such a resource.
According to Glen Beard, Choctaw County School District Superintendent, the new construction project at Choctaw County High School is progressing on schedule and should be completed by February 15, 2020. This new building will consist of administrative offices, 10 new classrooms and new labs.
