This past Wednesday, February 10, the Choctaw County Board of Supervisors, along with other members of the county government, the Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce, and other interested residents, gathered to officially raise the new state flag over the County Courthouse.
Also present was the primary flag designer, and Choctaw County resident, Rocky Vaughan, and his sons Ryder and Brody.
The ceremony, which was hosted by the Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce, featured a welcome from Chamber Secretary, Suellen Clement, followed by a prayer from District 4 Supervisor, John Shumaker, and comments from Board President, Joey Stephenson, followed by remarks from Vaughan.
Stephenson stated that one of the things about the design that stood out to him was the words ‘In God We Trust,’ adding that God has truly blessed Choctaw County.
Vaughan said that he began working on a redesign for the flag eight years ago, because it was constantly in the news, and knowing that it would eventually be changed he came up with a few designs. Vaughan, who is a graphic designer, added that with his God-given abilities and being able to work with all demographic groups, he felt confident in taking on the task at hand.
He said, “Thanks to God, for instilling the confidence that I needed to insert myself and my family into, at times, such an uncomfortable subject.”
He added that he hopes Choctaw County is as proud of him, as he is to give the county one more thing to be proud of.
Stephenson then assisted Vaughan in raising the new banner over the Courthouse, before closing comments from Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Donna McKay.
