The City of Louisville Board of Aldermen heard a report from Beth Edwards, librarian for the Winston County Library. Edwards gave the board a summary of all of the programs the library has held since December 2024 up until February 2024.
She said that Andy Childress had been to every school in the county, including Head Start.
Edwards also told the aldermen about Wonderbooks.
“A narrator reads the book to the child and the child is able to follow along with the book,” Edwards said. She also told the board about a service called Talking Book.
She said Talking Book is a free service and is available to those with visual, physical, or reading disabilities. This free service provides audio and Braille materials delivered directly to your door.
“It sends you a recorder and an envelope with the tape in it. And the person can put the tape in and read along with the materials. It’s great for someone who is learning to read and is impaired or for someone who loves to read and is impaired,” she said. “When I presented to the Supervisors, one of them reached out to me and we were able to provide the service for their family member.”
Edwards said if anyone qualified for the service to please let her know. Alderman Eugene Crosby asked about the Chess Club.
She said the Chess Club is going well and they have a really good turnout with it.
“You’d be surprised,” Edwards said.
Also, Mike Forrester with the Airport Board spoke to the aldermen. Forrester said a ramp project at the airport is nearing completion.
He said the project nearly doubles the size of the ramp and that every hangar at the airport is filled and he has a waiting list of people wanting to fly into Louisville.
Forrester also said it’s going to improve lighting, which is helpful to aircrafts in inclement weather. Aldermen Drew Massey asked Forrester if the Columbus Air Force Base utilized the airport.
“Yes, we have a memorandum with the CAFB and they use our air space as a training area. I’m hoping that I can get them to agree to participate in Wings over Winston.”
Speaking of Wings over Winston, Forrester said that he’s bringing back Wings over Winston and it will be held in October of this year.
“I know I said I wasn’t going to do it anymore. I had a weak moment,” he said. “But we’re going to do it again. This year it’s on October 11, which is a bye week for Mississippi State. There are no ballgames so we’re hoping for a good community turnout. We’ll have six of the top airobatics that will perform,” he said.
Forrester said it’s going to be a great event and it’s always a good turnout.
