In an election that came down to affidavits and was almost similar to the special election for the Ward 3 seat, this time, Steven Hampton came away with the win. Tuesday, residents in Ward 1 and Ward 3 went to the polls at the Louisville Coliseum to elect who they wanted to represent them on the City of Louisville Board of Aldermen for the next four years.
There were 12 affidavits that separated Hampton and Mays. Before the count of the affidavits, Hampton led with 128 votes and Mays had 91 votes. Erica Houston (who was on the ballot as Erica Love) had 37 votes.
In order to push a run off, Mays need all 13 votes, which would have given him 114 votes. But, the affidavits went in the favor of Hampton.
Hampton received nine extra votes, taking his total to 137 and Mays received 3, making his total 94. And Hampton secured his own first term, after serving out the remainder of Circuit Clerk Gwenita Mays term.
This is the second time the two have went head-to-head. When Hampton won the special election for the Ward 3 seat, he and Mays faced off in a runoff election to see who would serve the unexpired term of Circuit Clerk Gwenita Mays.
In Ward 1, Bill McGee defeated Hubert Nicholson for the Ward 1 seat. McGee garnered 115 votes or 56 percent of the vote to Nicholson’s 81 or 40 percent of the vote. Nicholson received one affidavit, making his total 82. Danyell Logan, who dropped out of the race, received six votes. McGee will succeed current alderman Drew Massey.
Because Logan dropped out of the race, it became a two-man race and it doesn’t go to a runoff. Even if Logan had remained in the race, McGee still garnered 50 percent plus one of the vote for the win.
The seats were the only two contested seats in the City of Louisville race. Mayor Will Hill and Aldermen, L.M. Claiborne, Eugene Crosby and Corey Ming and were unopposed and will go to the general election. One vote for each of the men will solidify their position for the next four years.
The winner of the primary elections will move on to the general election on June 3, 2025 where everyone will be unopposed. McGee will join the board as the newest member at their first July meeting, when everyone is sworn in.
