The December meeting in Weir was a somber one, but they pushed on. Stepping in as interim mayor is Mayor Pro Tem Doug Atkinson. The Town of Weir has taken some hits this year, with the death of the late Thomas Higgins and recently the death of the late Mayor Glen Beard, Sr.
George Crawford with Golden Triangle Planning and Development District told the board that their Community Development Block Grant for their sewer lagoon has been completed and is preparing to close it out.
Crawford said he needed the board’s approval to put in the paperwork for an extension for three months and it needed to be sent before the end of the month. The board approved the extension.
He also told the board that he needed to change the signatures from Beard to Atkinson and Clerk Cyndy Josey. The board also approved the changing of signatures.
The Town of Weir also is seeking a public works director. Alderman Steve Wright said one thing he wants to include is for the candidate to be able to demonstrate a competence in being able to operate equipment utilized for the position. Aldermen are also seeking someone that lives near Weir or 50 miles within the radius of Weir, so if something happens the candidate can get to town as quickly as possible.
Chief Dillon Cates told the board that he’s been awarded a Homeland Security grant, but it was for a lot less than what was asked and for what was needed. But, he was able to get a generator.
