The ninth-annual Pink Celebration will be held at the Louisville Coliseum on Saturday, October 21, 2023, in conjunction with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event is from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. The public is invited to come together to honor all those affected by Breast Cancer and to spread awareness.

Harrison wins Mathiston special election

Jeff Harrison won last week’s special election in Mathiston for alderman.

He received the most votes of four candidates on Sept. 19. Vote totals for each were Harrison, 53; Josh Palmer, 34; Sharon Fulgham, 13; and Jeffery “Mark” Jones, five.

The town has 548 registered voters and the voter turnout was only 19%.

Tourism tax takes effect Sunday in city of Eupora

The city of Eupora’s 2% tax on sales of room rentals and restaurant food takes effect Sunday, Oct. 1, according to the Mississippi Department of Revenue.

An MDR bulletin released Sept. 1 explained the new Eupora tourism tax will impose a 2% tax on the gross sales of room rentals and prepared food sales in the city.

Monthly sales tax collections released

Sales tax revenue numbers that reflect July sales are in from the Mississippi Department of Revenue for local municipalities.

MDR collects 81.5% of the 7% sales tax from municipalities and distributes the remaining 18.5% back to the municipalities over a three-month cycle.
