Sales tax collections for local municipalities released

Sales tax revenue numbers that reflect January sales are in from the Mississippi Department of Revenue for local municipalities.

MDR collects 81.5% of the 7% sales tax from municipalities and distributes the remaining 18.5% back to the municipalities over a three-month cycle.

County’s unemployment rate at 2.7%

Webster County’s unemployment rate decreased four-tenths of a percentage point during February, according to preliminary data from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.

The jobless rate here was 2.7% in February, compared to 3.1% in January and 3.2% in February 2023. The 12-month moving average is 2.9%.

Mathiston PD charges woman with trafficking

The Mathiston Police Department arrested a woman last week on a drug trafficking charge.

Chief Blake Love and Officer Nathan Carroll stopped Michelle Crowley for a traffic violation the morning of March 27, according to the MPD. The stop led to an arrest and she was charged with trafficking a controlled substance (meth).

Inmates receive tools to overcome

A group of inmates on the work program at the Choctaw County Jail have received the tools needed to help them break cycles and begin a new life when they are released.

Dakota Gant, Jail administrator for the jail, said in December they held their first short-term alcohol and drug program.
