A young Choctaw County baseball team suffered growing pains this year, winning only four games and missing the payoffs. But coach Andy Young is confident of a bright future.
“We have a really good group coming back next year,” he said. “I expect big things out of this group.”
Young is especially high on his freshmen. Catcher Micah Gammil, shortstop Clark Gammil, pitcher/outfielder Tyson Coleman, pitcher/infielder Connor Jewell and pitcher/infielder Trace Beard all saw extensive action this year.
Young compared his freshman class to the class that graduated last year after two straight 14-8 seasons. “The ninth grade group is a really exciting group.”
He also mentioned the contribution of sophomore pitcher Brian Threadgill, and said there was talent on the junior high team with players who will compete for playing time next year. “They're good little athletes.”
The summer program beings May 28, with 16 games scheduled. Young expects to have all of the underclassmen.
“It will give the guys more reps,” he said. “Summer is a little more relaxed. It's a chance to put the fun into baseball.”

The Choctaw County softball team had an uneventful time last week. The Lady Chargers were scheduled to play three games to end the regular season. They played none.
Choctaw County received forfeits from Charleston and Ruleville Central and a game with Noxapater was rained out.
As the winner of Region 3-3A, Choctaw County received a first round bye in the MHSAA playoffs and met Nettleton in the second round. The opening game in the best of three series was played Monday at Nettleton. Game 2, and Game 3 if necessary, were played at Choctaw County Tuesday.
The winner plays the winner between Houston and Booneville in a quarterfinals series scheduled to begin Friday.
Nettleton, the 2011 state champion, finished third in Region 4 and defeated Water Valley in the opening round of the playoffs.
