First-year Nanih Waiya head girls basketball coach Warner Parkes says his Lady Warriors are eager to put in the work to get the program headed in a successful direction.
“We are really young,” Parkes said. “We only have one senior and two juniors. I like how hard they play and how they work in practice and in the classroom. They really play well together.
“ I got them in June and you can tell they really want to be good and to win ball games,” he said. While there will obviously be a starting five, although that may change from game to game, Parkes said the key to the team’s success will be the bench play.
“When we sub out we don’t get worse,” he said. “We have good balance. We have 10 people who can play. You are only as good as your bench.”
Junior Jalia Cotton will play the 3 guard for the Lady Warriors, while sophomore Ambria Tubby runs the point. Parkes is also counting on senior center Madison Alford and freshman Morgan Mills to provide some inside help for his team. After that he says his team is truly a mix-and-match type of squad that can present multiple looks.
As far as style of play, Parkes readily admits he likes to run set plays, but isn’t going to do that to the detriment of his team.
“I love to run stuff,” he said. “But I’m not going to slow them down and run stuff when we don’t have to. If we can run and gun and get it down the floor then that’s what we will do.”
Parkes said defense has gotten a lot of his focus in practice.
“We play a lot of man defense,” he said. “We haven’t been great defensively in the past. Every single day we spend an hour-plus working on defense.”
The Lady Warriors opened their season last Saturday with a 53-46 road win over Madison St. Joseph.
Tubby scored 25 points and dished out eight assists in the game, while Mills had a team high eight rebounds.
Alford scored six points and had five boards for the winners, while Cotton had six points, five rebounds and three assists and sophomore Taina Thompson had six points, four rebounds, and two assists.
