Calhoun City and East Webster squared off this past week in a showdown for the top spot in Division 4-2A baseball.
The Wildcats got the better of the Wolverines, winning 14-8 on Tuesday and 12-5 on Friday to sweep the series.
East Webster, now 11-5 on the season, will return to action this week as they travel to Choctaw County on Monday. They will host Houston on Tuesday and West Point on Thursday. On Friday, the Wolverines will host Leflore County in a Division 4-2A doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
Calhoun City improved to 16-3 and stayed unbeaten in 4-2A play.
Calhoun City 14, East Webster 8
The Wildcats built a 5-0 lead and hung on to take a six-run win over the Wolverines in Tuesday.
Calhoun scored two in the second, three in the third, six in the fourth and three in the sixth. East scored four in the fourth, three in the third and one in the seventh.
East Webster had nine hits in the contest as Wes Silver was 2-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs while Hastings Gibson was 2-for-4. John Austin Roberts was 2-for-4 while John Wesley Hardin and Sloan Hillhouse each had two RBIs.
Gray McCarter started on the mound and took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three.
Calhoun City 12, East Webster 5
The Wolverines put together plenty of hits but struggled scoring runs as the Wildcats pulled away to take a seven-run win and sweep the Wolverines on Friday.
East Webster scored two runs in the first before Calhoun City exploded with eight runs in the top of the fourth inning. East added one in the fourth and two in the fifth before Calhoun finished with two in the sixth and seventh innings.
East Webster had 12 hits in the contest but left 10 runners on base. Hastings Gibson was 3-for-4 to lead the Wolverines at the plate while Sloan Hillhouse was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. John Austin Roberts was 2-for-4 with a triple while Wes Silver was 2-for-4. John Wesley Hardin had a double and scored a run while Jesse Roberts singled and drove in a run.
Roberts got the start on the mound and pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up eight runs on one hit and four walks while striking out three. Gray McCarter pitched the next 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on three hits. Kainan Reed pitched the next 2/3 of an inning and gave up one rune while Gavin Edwards finished up the contest by pitching the last inning and gave up one run on two hits while striking out two.
