Calhoun City scored 28 second-half points to take a 36-0 win over Eupora on Thursday night in a Division 2-2A contest.
Eupora falls to 2-6 on the season and 1-1 in division play. The Eagles will travel to J.Z. George this week in hopes of picking up another division win.
On Thursday night, the Eagles played tough for a half before the Wildcats got rolling in the second half and took their second division win of the season.
“I feel like Calhoun City is one of the better teams in 2A this year and they did a good job of outflanking us on some plays,” Eupora coach Stephen Edwards said. “I thought our kids played hard the whole game, especially the second half. We didn’t have any turnovers and were getting yards here and there and moving the chains. It was a one-score game at halftime and they made some adjustments to find some things and things just got away from us in the second half.”
After swapping punts to start the game, Eupora put together a 13-play drive but ended up punting it back to Calhoun City. The Wildcats then put together a 10-play, 79-yard drive as scored on a 19-yard quarterback keeper early in the second quarter. The try for two was good and Calhoun City led 8-0, a score that held until halftime.
“We had a lot of freshmen and sophomores on the field,” Edwards said. “They are going to be good in the future but are just inexperienced right now. Calhoun City had seven seniors on defense and it just makes a difference. It was the same way on offense. It’s just our reality right now but this bunch is going to be pretty good in a couple of years.”
Calhoun City got the ball to star the second half and opened up the flood gates as they scored on four straight possessions. The first was on a 53-yard pass with 10:10 left in the third to go up 16-0.
After a Eupora punt, Calhoun City got back to work and went 41 yards in seen plays and scored on a 20-yard run to go up 24-0. The Wildcats added a 66-yard run and a 2-yard run and failed on both two-point conversions for the final margin of 36-0.
Eupora had 98 yards rushing and 6 passing for 104 yards of total offense. Tra McComb led the Eagles with 78 yards rushing on 15 carries.
Calhoun City had 389 yards rushing with three 100-yard rushers. Kody Townsend had 149 yards on 11 carries while Chardarius Hill had 119 yards on six carries. Jayden Griffin had 117 yards on 16 carries. Hill was also 5-10 passing for 91 yards to give the Wildcats 470 yards of total offense.
On defense, Deunte Watson led the Eagles with 14 tackles while Landon Davis, Ty Murphy and Chris Robinson each had eight tackles. Kyle Kilgore had six tackles while Jacob Column had four. Zak Morris caused a fumble and had two pass deflections while Sean Conley recovered a fumble.
