French Camp Academy head football coach Nathan Wright was upbeat despite a 28-0 loss to defending 1A state champion Nanih Waiya.
“We played better than we have played all year long in terms of intensity and being in the right places,” Wright said. “The energy was great. Everybody played with enthusiasm and got after it. If we had played at this level all year long, we would probably have one loss to Nanih Waiya.”
But he added, “We were in the red zone a couple of times and turned the ball over. Every times we got down there, we did something crazy, Just before halftime, we're driving. We're on about the 20 yard line and we fumble.”
C.J. Johnson passed for 42 yards and ran for 67. Phillip Caradine had 15 carries for 72 yards.
Bradley Edwards led the defense with nine tackles. Caradine had eight. Javen Anderson had an interception and Holt Barlow recovered two fumbles.
French Camp is 1-5 overall, 1-2 in Region2-1A. The Panthers have a region game at West Lowndes Friday. West Lowndes is enjoying a turnaround season. After going 2-9 a year ago, the Panthers are 6-1 and 3-1 in region play. The only loss was 35-24 against Nanih Waiya.
“They're much improved,” Wright said.
Marcquez Holiday leads the West Lowndes offense. He ran for 168 yards with four touchdowns in a win over Ethel and 177 with one TD in a victory over Hamilton.
Nanih Waiya is 4-2 with a four game winning streak and 3-0 in region play.
