French Camp cross country participated in the North Mississippi Challenge. No team scores were kept, but French Camp's top finishers were Colby Walters for the boys, 18th in 20:28.027 for 5,000 meters and Averie Jane Gundy for the girls. She was 14th in 24:33.584.
“It was an incredibly challenging course. Easily the most difficult course we have run this year,” said coach Joe Watkins.
Walters was the only French Camp boy to receive a shirt for finishing in the top 30. David Ferguson was 32nd in 21:09.278.
French Camp had four other runners in the top 30 for girls. Olivia Gundy was 21st in 26:03,725, Maddie Davis 22nd in 26:11.835, McKenzie Griffin 27th in 26:57.915 and Kelsey Bridges 30th in 27:19.127.
“Our girls really cleaned up, Watkins said. “And the oldest of those girls is Maddie. She's a 10th grader. That's encouraging.”
French Camp will participate in a meet Saturday at Choctaw Trails in Jackson, site of the state meet. “That's the reason for going there. To get a feel for what it is like,” Watkins said.
