The Nanih Waiya boys and girls basketball teams are working to getting into playing form early in their seasons.
The NW boys, who are still playing without several key players due to football, have dropped a pair of games, while the Lady Warriors, working to learn the system of new head coach Warner Parkes, are off to a 1-1 start.
This week the boys and girls were set to host East Webster on Tuesday, before visiting Kemper Academy on Monday, Nov. 18, and hosting J.Z. George the following day.
Coach Austin Swart’s Nanih Waiya boys lost their season opener in the St. Joseph Classic by a score of 49-47 on Nov. 2. Last week they fell to Winona 56-44.
Junior Ricco Moore pumped in 23 points for the Warriors in the opener, while Isziaha Nicholson had 12, and Trey McMullan six.
Tyquan McCully had a team high 16 points for NW against Winona, while Nicholson scored 11.
“The guys never gave up and continued working hard until the final buzzer.” Swart said.
The Lady Warriors dropped a 30-28 decision to Winona last week.
“We played from behind the entire game and it was only tied once,” Parkes said. “I was not surprised by the low score, that is how I wanted it to be. I felt like if we held them to 30 points we could win, but we just didn’t score enough.”
Ambria Tubby led NW in scoring with six points.
