Noxapater has qualified 10 lifters – six girls and four boys – for the state powerlifting meet April 13 at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.
The girls qualified at the Class I (1A and 2A schools) South State meet March 7 at Bogue Chitto. The boys qualified last Saturday at the 1A South State meet hosted by Ethel.
The Tigers finished fourth out of 10 teams at South State with 20 points. Sacred Heart was first with 45 points, followed by Ethel 36 and Lumberton 30.
Lifters had to place in the to three in their weight classes to qualify for the state meet. Noxapater's boys qualifiers are junior Jace McAdory, second at 123; sophomore Tray Anderson, third at 242; junior Kyler Carter, first at 275 and sophomore Jaylen Carter, second at 275.
McAdory totaled 710 pounds for the three lifts (bench press, squat and dead lift), five less than Kentrell Dotson of Ethel, the weight class winner. Anderson totaled 1,110 pounds, Kyler Carter 1,145 and Jaylen Carter 1,035.
“I'm extremely proud of them. They competed their tails off,” said coach Jon Cates.
The girls finished third at South State in the first year that the school has fielded a team, trailing Scott Central and Heidelberg, a couple of 2A schools.
Qualifiers: senior Raleigh Grace Parker, first at 97; senior Katelyn Barnett, first at 132; junior Kalan Brown, second at 132; senior Abria Lewis, second at 181; senior Morgan Hunter, second at 220; and senior Fantrasia Carter, third at 242-plus.
Nanih Waiya sophomore Tatum Luke was second in 1A South State at 165 with lifts totaling 980 pounds. Nanih Waiya does not have a girls team.
