After two years at Holmes Community College that culminated with a prestigious award, Eupora High School grad Chavez Embry will continue his football career at a four-year college. He has signed with the University of West Alabama.
“They showed the most love for me,” Embry said. “They showed a lot of interest in me when I went down there for my visit. I felt like it was a safe environment for me to do my studies and get my degree.”
He plans to major in physical education with the goal of being a coach.
Embry played both ways at Eupora, but played only on the defensive line his two years at Holmes, using his 6-3, 285-pound frame to swallow up ball carriers, and that’s where he expects to play at West Alabama.
The Holmes coaching staff awarded Embry the Milton Lee Olive Award for Courage and Character.
“I was very honored to win the award knowing who it was named for and what he did,” Embry said.
Embry earned praise from Stephen Edwards, Eupora’s head coach his junior and senior years. “He was always hard working. He did everything we asked him to do.”
Embry played several positions for the Eagles and played well at all of them, Edwards said.
Embry says his two years at Holmes benefitted him, on and off the field. “Being there taught me a lot of things; how to adjust to life and become a better football player.”
The University of Wet Alabama is located in Livingston, Ala, 40 miles northeast of Meridian. It is a Division II school that competes in the Gulf South Conference. There are 13 members of the conference but only nine have football teams, including Mississippi College and Delta State.
