The Noxapater basketball teams were set to host a pair of Region 5-1A contests this week, with McAdams coming in on Tuesday and Ethel paying a visit on Friday.
Both the Noxapater boys and girls squads are looking for their first league wins of the season. Following this week’s action the Tigers and Lady Tigers head just down the road to pay a visit to Nanih Waiya on Tuesday, Feb. 4 before closing out the regular season at West Lowndes on Feb. 7.
The Region 5-1A tournament will be played at McAdams Feb. 11-14.
In last week’s boys action Noxapater played French Camp tough before falling 61-53.
The game was tied 12-12 after one quarter of play, but homestanding FCA outscored the Tigers 21-11 in the second quarter and 11-8 in the third to go up 44-31. Noxapater outscored FCA 22-17 in the fourth quarter.
D.J. Kelly was on fire for the Tigers, scoring 25 points against FCA, while Kyle Phillips added 10.
Earlier in the week the Tigers dropped a 75-47 home contest to powerful West Lowndes. Phillips led the way with 18 points in that contest, while Ryan Whitfield scored 10.
In girls action the Lady Tigers fell to top-ranked West Lowndes 93-15 and French Camp 55-22.
The Lady Panthers of WL, which were undefeated heading into this week’s play, live up to their billing by taking a 23-2 lead after one quarter of play, After a second quarter that saw West Lowndes outscore Noxapater 16-12 the winners outscored the Lady Tigers 36-1 in the third quarter to put the game away.
Kaylan Brown and Kaliyah Moore scored four points each for Noxapater, while Jenna Wilkes had three.
Friday’s game saw Noxapater take a 10-7 first quarter lead, only to have homestanding French Camp outscore the Lady Tigers 25-1 in the second quarter to go up 32-11 at the half.
Freshman Asia Glass led the Lady Tigers with 12 points, while senior Morgan Duran scored six.
