Shia Moore and Tylan Glass of 1A state champion Nanih Waiya played key roles for the North in a 28-7 victory at the Bernard Blackwell North-South All Star Game Saturday at Gulfport High School.
Glass scored the game's first touchdown in the second quarter when he blocked a punt and returned it 40 yards. Moore, who played linebacker, scored the second touchdown on an interception return also in the second quarter. He made six tackles and was named Defensive MVP. Glass had three tackles.
They received praise from Greenwood coach Clinton Gatewood who was head coach for the North. “I talked to them and told them how proud I am of them. Even though they come from 1A they can play Division I football. They have the size, they have the intelligence, they have the speed, they have the want. You don't find that in a lot of kids.”
Moore played running back and linebacker for the Warriors. He had 91 carries for 703 yards and eight TDs. As a linebacker he had 64 tackles.
Glass also went both ways as a wide receiver and linebacker. He had 32 receptions for 586 yards and seven TDs. On defense, he made 110 tackles with two sacks, two interceptions and four fumble recoveries.
In a 28-13 victory over Lumberton in the championship game, Moore carried 17 times for 125 yards, made six tackles and set up a touchdown with an interception. Glass caught a TD pass and made nine tackles.
Kristian Hopkins of Louisville had four tackles as a North linebacker and received his team's C-SPIRE Scholar Athlete Award. Drea Shumaker of Louisville also played for the North,
The North's other two touchdowns came on pass receptions by E. Jai Mason of Clinton, who was named Offensive MVP. He caught a 34-yard pass from Joseph Perez of Thomas E. Edwards that made it 20-0 at the half and a 15-yarder from D.T. Sheffield of 4A champion Corinth in the fourth quarter.
The South scored in the third quarter on a 15-yard pass from Alijah Martin of North Pike to Rhyen Brico of Hattiesburg.
