The Choctaw County softball team had five easy wins last week, outscoring opponents 125-3.
The Lady Chargers swept two doubleheaders, defeating J.Z. George 29-0 and 33-2 and Amanda Elzy 21-0 and 30-1. Choctaw County also beat Charleston 12-0. All were Region 3-3A games, giving Choctaw County a 5-0 region record and 6-1 overall.
“I was very pleased,” said coach Lance Thomas. “When we had the opportunity, when the other team was throwing strikes, we hit the ball well. And I was very pleased with our pitcher, Lizzie Thomas.”
The Lady Chargers had 24 hits in the two games with J.Z. George. Allison Brown had a homer, single and four RBIs in the first game and a double, triple and five RBIs in the second game. Caden Miles had two doubles and drove in five runs in the opener. Ayana Taylor homered twice in the nightcap.
In the win over Charleston, Taylor had a double, triple and two RBIs and Thomas pitched four hitless inning with seven strikeouts.
Coach Thomas was especially pleased with the pay of two of his younger players, Kaylee Goodin, an eighth grader, and Makenzie Sanders, a seventh grader. “They have very high softball IQs,” he said.
For the week, Lizzie Thomas pitched nine hitless innings, with 19 strikeouts. Freshman Akira Taylor and Molly Thomas, a seventh grader, also saw action on the mound during the week, with encouraging results.
The easy wins gave coach Thomas an opportunity to see his younger players in action. “That's going to help us down the road.”
The Lady Chargers played unbeaten Kosciusko Monday, have a home game with Charleston Thursday and will be at Houston Friday. Kosciusko and Houston are non-region games.
