Grace Christian boys basketball split two games last week. The Eagles defeated Meridian Flyers 66-47 but lost to Hillcrest Christian 70-33 at the Winston Academy Shoot Out. It was the Eagles’ first loss, dropping their record to 5-1.
Grace Christian led Meridian 30-20 at the half and it was never close in the second half. Alex Taylor led the Eagles with 19 points. Jacob Hogue had 16 and Zach Boyles scored 14.
Boyles was the only Eagle in double figures against Hillcrest with 10 points. “They out talented us,” said Grace Christian coach Bobby Bowman.
Hillcrest is a talented MAIS AAA school that won 25 games last year.
GIRLS
The Lady Eagles were defeated by Meridian Flyers and Noxapater. Grace Christian played both games without center Caroline Robbins, who was out with an illness.
The game with Meridian was tied after three quarters, but Grace Christian was outscored 12-2 in the fourth quarter and lost 27-17. Tamia Brewer scored seven points for Grace Christian and Carlee Peterson had six.
Brewer was also the team’s high scorer against Noxapater with seven points. “They’re a physically tougher team,” coach Talor Troyer said of Noxapater.
The Eagles and Lady Eagles were set to play Diamond Grove Tuesday and will be at Starkville Christian Thursday.
