Choctaw County had a tough week on the diamond, losing twice to Nettleton by identical 10-3 scores and once to Eupora 4-0.
A fluke play was the turning point in the second Nettleton game. With Choctaw County holding a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, Nettleton had runners at first and second with one out when a grounder hit the runner going to third. Charger shortstop Clark Crowley fielded the ball and started a 6-4-3 double play. But because the ball hit the runner, the runner was out and it was a dead ball, nullifying the double play.
Nettleton then went on to score seven runs before Choctaw County could record the third out.
“We should have gotten out of the inning,” said coach Andy Young. “After that, the wheels fell off.”
The Chargers had nine hits in the game, including two each by Crowley, Justin Jenkins and Landon Wells. Jenkins had a single and double, scored a run and drove home one.
In the first Nettleton game, Choctaw County's five hits included doubles by Wells and Calvin Talley. Evan Smith hit two homers for Nettleton.
Choctaw County managed five hits against Eupora, but did not score. “We would get a guy to third, but we couldn't get him home,” Young said.
Reed Hale went 3-3 with an RBI for Eupora.
The Chargers have three games in three days this week, Thursday at New Hope, Friday home against South Pontotoc and Saturday home against Philadelphia. The 2009 2A state champion Ackerman High School team will be honored before Saturday's 1 p.m. game with Philadelphia.
