MADISON – Competing against mostly larger schools, French Camp's first official meet came in the Madison Central Track Classic.
The boys finished 15th with eight points and the girls 12th with 15 points.
Ami Sherrif led the girls, finishing fourth in the 1600 (6:15.73), sixth in the 800 (2:43.97) and 12th in the 400 (1:11.74). Tessa Mullins was seventh in the 3200 (17:21.91).
Coach Joe Watkins was especially pleased with performances of three other girls. Maddi Davis was 12th in the 100 hurdles (20.76) and seventh in the 300 hurdles (54.16). “She fared all right in the 100 hurdles, but in the 300 hurdles she did great; dropped three seconds from her best time,” Watkins said.
Davis also was the leadoff runner on the 1600 relay team that finished eighth in 4:55.49. She was followed by Averie Jane Gundy and Emma Wright, with Sheriff running anchor.
Two newcomers to the team showed potential. Neviah Gathright was 10th in the 400 with a time of 1:10.78 and Jasmine Bonty took seventh in the shot put with a throw of 28-10½.
“She is just as green as can be and for her to do as well as she did is just awesome,” Watkins said of Bonty.
The boys were led by Colby Walters, who was fourth in the 1600 in 5:01.46, sixth in the 800 (2:15.76) and 14th in the 400 (55.80). The only runners to finish ahead of Walters in the 1600 were from 6A powerhouses Pearl and Madison Central.
Adlai Urbina was 10th in the 800 (2:22.30).
The next meet will be April 5 at Germantown High School in Madison.
