The Wolverines of East Webster finished up spring football workouts with a scrimmage at Booneville High School, falling 21-13 to the Blue Devils.
“We were able to get in 10 days of practice and I felt like we only had one bad practice in that time,” coach Ron Price said. “I felt like we had a good spring and had our baseball kids out and we really needed them. We were thankful that they were getting football reps. For us, this spring was about getting guys in the right positions. We had a lot of open spots on offense and defense. And coming out of the spring game, we felt like we answered most of those questions and have a good idea of where we need to head in the fall.”
On the offensive line, Price said Hastings Gibson, Preston Hill, Cohen Clark, Sedrick Taylor and Caleb Massey will man the offensive line.
“We only had two returning starters in Caleb and Cohen,” Price said “I felt good about those guys that we finished with, we just need to get more reps. We’ve got to develop some depth on the line and have some guys like James Belk, Scott Mendez and Camron Jennings that will contribute there. We just have to get those guys to where they need to be by August.”
Price said one of the points of emphasis this summer will be the throwing game.
“We have to improve on our ability to throw the ball and hit open receivers,” Price said. “We struggled getting the ball to open guys and that’s something we will work on in 7-on-7.”
Price did praise the work of Conner Shurden, Daniel Rogers, and Carter Flora at wide receiver while Tyreke Pittman and John Cunningham saw a lot of work at running back.
“I feel like we have some weapons to work with but it all starts up front,” Price said. “Hopefully they will commit to the weight room and we can improve on the passing game in 7-on-7 this summer.”
Price said the defense struggled at times.
“The short week hurt us because we were going to work on Booneville in that last few practices,” Price said. “They hurt us with their screen game and that’s something we would have worked on. They did what we needed them to do. If we can have the right attitude this summer and going into the fall, we could be very successful in the fall.”
