One of the things that East Webster football coach Ron Price wants to find out is if he has a physical football team.
He will know for sure on Saturday when the Wolverines travel to East Mississippi and take on defending 1A state champion Nanih Waiya on the Scooba campus in an 11 a.m. jamboree contest.
“They aren’t going to sugar coat anything,” Price said. “With their size, they are big and athletic and are going to run it right at you. It’s a heck of a first game to play that kind of competition. Hopefully we are mentally and physically ready to do that. You can teach tackling on a dummy and the tackling wheel but until you are out there and they are moving around, you really don’t know. We are going to see how well we can tackle and perform defensively.”
Price said the Wolverines will go in full pads on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before preparing for Saturday’s jamboree.
“We have challenged them to be a physical group,” Price said. “We need to be more physical up front and be able to run the ball. Offensively, we know we are going to have to execute against Nanih Waiya. I just hope we can match them offensively because I know they will be physical on defense as well. We want to feel good going into that first game of the season. We know we are going to make some mistakes, just hope they don’t turn into big plays.”
Price said his team had a good first week of practice.
The Wolverines will open the season on Aug. 23 at Class 4A South Pontotoc.
