Both East Webster basketball teams advanced to the Division 2-2A finals on Friday night, but neither team could get past Calhoun City as the Lady Wolverines fell 63-53 and the Wolverines fell 75-44.
The Wolverines moved to 19-11 on the season and were set to host Baldwyn on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Lady Wolverines are now 21-10 and will hosted Walnut on Monday. First-round wins by East Webster would likely mean a trip to Newton on Friday and Saturday for second-round action.
Calhoun City boys 75,
East Webster 44
The Wolverines fell behind early and couldn’t mount any kind of comeback as the Wildcats took a 31-point win in the Division 2-2A finals on Friday night.
Calhoun City raced out to a. 25-6 lead in the first period and led 40-23 at the half. The Wildcats continued to extend the lead in the second half, outscoring the Wolverines 14-10 in the third and 21-11 in the fourth to take the win.
“Calhoun City came out and was hitting very well,” coach Jon Ginn said. “They hit four 3-pointers in the first and we got down in a hurry. It allowed them to speed the game up and they turned us over and got a couple of layups. They came out and punched us in the mouth and put us in a deep hole. They did a good job of defending us and it kind of snowballed on us.”
Keevon Patterson led East Webster with 23 points while Carrin Townsend added 10 points. Reed Gatlin added six points.
Calhoun City girls 63,
East Webster 53
The Lady Wildcats pulled away in the third period and took a 10-point win over the Lady in the 2-2A championship game on Friday.
Calhoun City came out and led 19-15 at the end of the first and 26-24 at the half. The Lady Wildcats got rolling in the third period as they outscored East Webster 25-17 in the third to lead 51-41 going into the fourth, where each team scored 12 points.
“We actually came out and took a lead in the third and then they went on a run and by the time we got our feet under us, we were down by 10,” Ginn said. “They did a good job of hitting free throws down the stretch and not turning the ball over. We got after them, we just couldn’t force them into the bad decisions we need to cut into the lead.”
Isha Patterson and Mariah Bell led East Webster with 13 points apiece while Whitney Winter had 11 points. Lauren Graves also chipped in 10 points.
East Webster boys 50,
Northside 47
The Wolverines pulled ahead in the third period and held on to take a three-point win over Northside in the 2-2A semifinals.
After each team scored 10 points in the first period, Northside took a 19-18 lead at the half. East Webster then outscored Northside 16-10 in the third to take a 34-29 lead into the fourth. Northside outscored East Webster 18-16 in the fourth but the Wolverines held on to take the win.
Reed Gatlin led East Webster with 16 points while Sedrick Taylor and Carrin Townsend each had 12 points apiece. Keevon Patterson also chipped in seven points.

Leflore County 25
The Lady Wolverines had little trouble with Leflore County on Tuesday night as they took a 37-point win.
The Lady Wolverines jumped out and led 24-6 in the first period and outscored the Lady Panthers 20-7 in the second to lead 44-13 at the half as they cruised to the win.
Whitney Winter led the Lady Wolverines with 15 points while Lauren Graves added 14 points. Isha Patterson had eight points while Mariah Bell added seven points and Shan Culpepper had six points.

Northside 41
The Lady Wolverines advanced to the 2-2A finals with a 19-point win over Northside on Thursday night.
East Webster outscored Northside in every period as they led 12-8 at the end of the first and 34-19 at the half. The Lady Wolverines continued to extend the lead in the second half as they outscored Northside 14-13 in the third and 12-9 in the fourth.
Whitney Winter led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points while Mariah Bell had 13 points. Isha Patterson and Lauren Graves had nine points while Jaden Johnson had six points.
