When East Webster took on Alcorn Central on Friday, it was a game where little went right for the young Wolverines. Alcorn Central jumped out to an early lead and held on to take a 46-39 win over the Wolverines on Friday.
Coach Jon Ginn said it was one of those games where the Wolverines struggled in several phases of the game.
“It seemed like we had a lid o the rim for the first three quarters,” Ginn said. “We went 0-for-12 from three and missed some inside shots as well. And the more we struggled from the outside, the more they tightened the noose on that zone. We had some good looks from three, we just didn’t knock them down. Had we gotten a couple of those to fall, it could have changed the complexion of the game.”
Alcorn controlled the game for most of the as the led 10-6 at the end of the first and 23-12 at the half. Alcorn extended its lead in the third, outscoring East Webster 14-9 to take a 37-21 lead. East Webster outscored Alcorn 18-9 in the fourth for the final margin of seven.
“And we turned the ball over too much,” Ginn said. “We had like 20 turnovers to their 13. We almost doubled them up in rebounds but when you turn it over that much, it negates that. When you don’t shoot well and turn it over, it’s hard to win. It was just a combination of several things.”
Cael Chrismond led East Webster with 12 points while Reid Gatlin and Blake Slay each had seven points apiece. Chandler Hodges also added six points.
Both teams will return from the Thanksgiving break and will travel to Ingomar on Tuesday and then host the East Webster shootout on Thursday and Friday. East Webster will host Philadelphia on Thursday starting at 6 p.m. and will play Mantachie on Friday starting at 7 p.m.
