The East Webster Lady Wolverines finished third in the Region 2-2A Tournament last week as they split a pair of games.
The Lady Wolverines were upset in the tournament semifinals on Thursday night when they dropped a 21-19 contest to Winona. But the Lady Wolverines bounced back and beat Leflore County 63-33 on Friday night in the consolation games.
After a second-place finish in regular-season competition, East Webster coach Michael Seger was pleased to see how much his team has improved this season.
“I’m very proud of the response this team had to a frustrating finish on Thursday,” Seger said. “Their energy and effort were outstanding. We had major contributions from everyone who played. This team has busted their tails all year. They've improved as much or more than any team I’ve ever coached from the beginning of the season. I was proud of their response tonight.”
The Lady Wolverines improve to 15-11 on the season and will travel to Coahoma County on Monday at 6 p.m.

In a low-scoring affair, the Winona Lady Tigers pulled off an upset of the No. 2 seeded Lady Wolverines in the tournament semifinals.
“This was totally on me,” Seger said. “I should have done a better job of getting us looks offensively on a night where we struggled to score. Winona dictated the pace of the game. We didn't play poorly defensively, but we were never able to get the game rolling at a pace we wanted. Credit Winona, they played a great game.”
Winona led 6-3 at the end of the first and 13-11 at the half. The pace didn’t pick up any as Winona outscored East Webster 7-2 in the third to take a 20-13 lead. East outscored Winona 6-1 in the fourth but couldn’t complete the comeback.
"I was proud of the way we competed in the final four minutes,” Seger said. “Had we played like that for 32 minutes, we would have won the game.”
Isha Patterson led East Webster with six points while Mariah Bell added five points.

After scoring just 19 points on Thursday night, the Lady Wolverines exploded for 63 on Friday night in a 30-point win over Leflore County in the consolation game of the 2-2A Tournament.
East led 15-3 at the end of the first and 23-10 at the half. The Lady Wolverines continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring Leflore 19-15 in the third and 21-8 in the fourth.
Mari-Todd Brown led East Webster with 22 points, including six 3-pointers. Kadasha Bryant and Isha Patterson each had 11 points apiece.
“Mari-Todd, Kadasha, Mariah, and Isha have been with me for three years,” Seger said. “I was pleased with how they stepped up and played so well. Their energy and effort were contagious for us. Mariah did an outstanding job defensively. She held the Region 2-2A Co-Offensive Player of Year to 6 points in the first half.”
