This past weekend, Louisville Mayor Will, along with Lori Black and Thomas Kelly, traveled with 18 local high school students to the University of Mississippi to attend the 12th Annual Mississippi Municipal League Youth Leadership Summit.
The students were all members of the Mayor’s Youth Council; the MYC is a group of young people working toward the common purpose of developing their individual leadership skills to strengthen their communities through volunteer service and increased communication with municipal leaders. Not only does the MYC allow students to interact and become familiar with local government, but the community service hours earned have become increasingly important in the college entry process. Students in the ninth through eleventh grades are free to apply for the Youth Council.
The Summit is an event that rotates to different college campuses around the state, and in past years Hill has taken the group to the University of Southern Mississippi, twice to Mississippi State University, Delta State University and Jackson State University.
After arriving on the Ole Miss campus Friday afternoon, the students had an opportunity to tour the campus, followed by a reception and an opportunity to interact with other students.
Saturday morning featured break-out sessions dealing with a number of topics, followed by a fun trivia game which was won by a local student, Curry Black; the prize was $200.
Hill stated in his years of escorting students to the Youth Leadership Summit, he had never had any problems, nor had to discipline anyone, and this year’s group did not disappoint. They shine a bright and favorable light on Louisville, and the community can be very proud of these young people.
