“The Gingerbread Baby” was the book of the day at the Maben Public Library on Dec. 6.
It is a great story written by Jan Brett. It tells of a family that makes a gingerbread boy cookie and the little boy, Matti, is impatient and peeks before the eight minutes has passed. Out jumps the gingerbread baby!
The father came through the door and out went the gingerbread baby. He ran by a cat, a dog, some goats, and two girls named Martha and Madeline. He tricked them and tied their braids in a knot.
While everyone was trying to catch the gingerbread baby, Matti was busy baking again. The gingerbread baby also outsmarted a pig and a fox but when he came to the woods, he couldn’t believe what he saw. There was a gingerbread house covered with candy and the door was wide open. He ran inside and Matti swept them up and went home.
When everybody got there, there was nothing left but a few crumbs. They went home and there was Matti with the gingerbread house. Matti could hear the tiny voice inside. It was the gingerbread baby and he was singing, “I’m the little Gingerbread Baby, lucky as can be, living in the house that Matti made for me.”
The children enjoyed decorating a gingerbread house with lots of icing and candy. They ate a little too!
