Mississippi State Treasurer and Republican Candidate for Attorney General, Lynn Fitch, was the keynote speaker at the charter meeting of the Choctaw Republican Women’s Club this past Thursday evening.
The meeting was held at the Choctaw County Community Center and brought together Choctaw County residents and political leaders, as well as some candidates for statewide office. Some members of the Winston County and Pontotoc County clubs were in attendance, as well.
The evening began with opening remarks from Nancy Frohn, First Congressional District Director. Frohn pointed out that Choctaw County had submitted their charter in August 2018, but due to the election year the charter was not granted until October 2018, adding that it was the first club to be chartered.
Speaking of the importance of women to the Republican Party, Frohn said, “If you want a job done give it to Republican women and it will happen.”
Vivian Dailey, President of the Mississippi Federation of Republican Women, stated that the evening was a celebration that would be long remembered, and in presenting the charter to Club President, Mariann McKinney-Beals, the club is a member in good standing of the MFRW and the National Federation of Republican Women. The charter grants to the members the rights, privileges and responsibilities of membership.
Dailey added that women are the backbone of the GOP, they are the hardest workers, who get the job done and get candidates elected.
Dailey also administered the Oath of Office to the officers of the Choctaw County club: McKinney-Beals, President; Cheryl McIntire, Treasurer. Jan Sloan, Vice-President and Rhonda Hood, Secretary were not present at the meeting.
Upon receiving the charter, McKinney-Beals said that the Republican women of Choctaw County were making history. And she recounted a story how, as a high school junior, she traveled to Washington, D.C., with her mother and grandmother, and realized that ‘this is a big deal.’ McKinney-Beals stated that the trip instilled in her the desire to make things better.
Fitch stated that women are the foundation of the Republican Party, and to the Choctaw County Club she added that they are on an exciting new journey.
She added, “Women have never waited to be given the opportunity to make a positive difference. We’ve always led on prosperity and equality and freedom. And there is a reason that Liberty is a lady.”
Concerning her candidacy for Attorney General, Fitch pointed out that there has not been a Republican AG since reconstruction. Some areas of focus are human trafficking, equal pay for equal work, the opioid crisis and making the state more business friendly.
