On election day, Tuesday, November 6, Choctaw County, as well as the rest of the state, saw a larger than average number of voters make their way to the polls.
Many counties in the state registered over 50 percent voter turnout.
On the federal level, with control of both houses of Congress at stake, this was seen as one of the most important elections in recent history.
On the ballot were both Senate seats, 1st Congressional District Representatives, as well as several state and local races.
Voters will return to the polls in less than two weeks to determine the winner in runoff election.
Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy advanced from a field of four candidates in that day’s special election to fill the remaining two years of the term of Sen. Thad Cochran. The race was nonpartisan and party labels did not appear on the ballot. Hyde-Smith (R) was appointed to the term vacated by the retirement of Senator Thad Cochran.
The runoff between the two will be Nov. 27.
Circuit clerk’s office will be open for runoff absentee voting from 8 a.m.-noon this Saturday and Nov. 24.
U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly (1st Congressional District), both Republicans, handily won re-election to additional terms and carried the county likewise.
In the Chancery court races, Kiley Kirk and Rosaling Jordan competed for the only open seat in District 6 place 2. Kirk won with 59% of the total vote in the six county district and Jordan received 41% of the vote total. Krik won the Choctaw County boxes as well.
