In a meeting of the Ackerman Board of Aldermen, on Tuesday, October 16, the Board voted 4-1 in favor of the sale of Thomas Glasgow Park to the Choctaw County School District, with Alderman Billy Ganann voting against the measure. However, the voted was vetoed by Mayor Tim Cutts.
In their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, November 6, the Board voted 4-1 to override the Mayor’s veto with Ganann voting against. The Town is now awaiting an Attorney General opinion before moving forward with the sale.
The Board voted unanimously to place the Mayor’s Letter of Veto into the minutes.
The Board heard from Mike Slaughter who presented the aldermen with several maps showing possible annexation study areas. The Board took no action and agreed to come together on Friday, November 9, to discuss the matter further.
In other action, the Board:
• Voted 5-0 to approve an ordinance prohibiting smoking in all Town of Ackerman Buildings and Properties.
• Voted 5-0 to credit personal property taxes for 2017.
• Voted 5-0 to credit delinquent water & sewer accounts receivable for fiscal year 2017-18.
• Voted 5-0 to hire Watkins, Ward & Stafford for fiscal year 2018-19 small municipality audit.
• Voted 5-0 to approve the power plant to sponsor a Community Service Project.
• Voted 5-0 to approve an expenditure for Turner Shaw Fence in the amount of $4.8K.
• Voted 5-0 for the following police personnel issues:
• Accept Jeremy Latham’s resignation effective November 18.
• Move Martha Caradine from part-time to full-time effective November 18.
• Hire Moultrie Lacey as part-time officer effective November 18.
• Move William Westbrook from full-time temporary to part-time effective November 16.
• Extend Quentin Saulsberry to full-time temporary through January 2019.
• Voted 5-0 to approve travel for Police Chief Tim Cook to New Police Chiefs Training in Ridgeland, MS on January 7-11,, 2019.
• Voted 5-0 to approve travel for Debbie Boley to attend the 2019 Mid-Winter Conference in Jackson, MS on January 8-10, 2019.
