Candidates for municipal offices in Ackerman had an opportunity to introduce themselves to the voters of the town during a political rally, this past Thursday evening. The rally, sponsored by the Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce, was held before a larger than expected crowd, at the Choctaw County Community Center.
With the rally scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., and members of the public steadily arriving, it was soon apparent that more chairs were needed to accommodate the crowd. Chamber of Commerce Director, Donna McKay, stated that she was very pleased with the turnout.
With all elected positions on the ballot on June 8, only two incumbents are running unopposed, Ward 1 Alderwoman Felecia Baber, and Alderman-at-Large Carl Phelps. Ward 2 incumbent, Tommy Curtis, is opposed by Lauren Carson; Phillip Reed is challenging Ward 3 incumbent, Chris Robinson, and Chris Jenkins and Brent Telano are vying for the Ward 4 seat being vacated by Alderman Billy Ganann who chose not to seek reelection. Incumbent Mayor Tim Cutts is facing two opponents, Ken Paine and Dale Reid.
McKay welcomed the crowd to the rally, followed by a prayer from Pastor Jerry Lawson. Chamber Communications Coordinator, Amanda McBride, led the gathering in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem was sung by Choctaw County High School Seniors, Hailey & Adrianna O’Bryant. Suellen Clement served as emcee and timekeeper.
Each candidate was given a five-minute time limit to introduce himself to he voters, and to talk briefly about their vision and hopes for the town, while incumbents spoke of their accomplishments while serving in office. Ward 3 Alderman Robinson was unable to attend the rally, but did provide a statement which was read by Clement. Each candidate urged voters to go to the polls on June 8.
All Ackerman voters will cast their ballots at Town Hall with the polls open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
