The Winston Cattleman Association (WCA) is an organization anyone, and everyone that has cattle or wanting to get into the cattle business absolutely needs to consider joining. Every County in Mississippi has a Cattleman Association, and each one operates under the direction of a Board of Directors made up of local cattleman.
The WCA breaks up their educational programming into two seasons, Spring season and Fall season with a combined seven educational programs. At these programs, members get to hear the latest research based information from MSU Beef Specialist, Industry leaders, local farm business owners, USDA agencies, etc. and a chance to network with local producers facing the same challenges the cattle business brings.
This Spring season the WCA Board partnered with Extension to implement educational programs in the areas of: Forage Types and Nutrition Values, Cattle Market Trends and Futures, Pasture Weed Management, and Cost Benefits of Animal Preconditioning. In addition to very high quality educational opportunities provided, the WCA saw significant growth of joining members. This growth is due to several factors, including the expansion of cattle operations within Winston County and state-wide, the WCA’s effort to recruit young cattleman, but mainly the diligent efforts of active members networking throughout the cattle producer community within our county.
For the last meeting of the spring season, WCA recognized Dr. Nadine Kirk for her dedicated service to the cattle producers of Winston County. Not only does Dr. Kirk bring relief, and healing to our county’s beef animals, she is always willing to be a speaker at WCA meetings, and a supportive member of the WCA educational mission.
On behalf of WCA, and MSU Extension, I’d like to say thank you, and congratulations to Dr. Nadine Kirk, our association is more impactful, and effective due to her membership and cooperation.
If you’d like to join us for the remainder of the 2019 season, Fall programs will begin in September through November. You can contact Winston’s MSU Extension office at 662-773-3091 or the USDA/FSA office at 662-773-2207 ext. 2.
