Choctaw County's jamboree scrimmage with New Hope to end spring practice was canceled due to heavy rain in the the Starkville area last week. First-year Choctaw County coach Jeff Roberts said the decision was made due to the risk of injury on a wet field at Starkville High School.
Roberts was pleased with what he saw during spring practice. “I'm probably more excited now than before (spring practice). More nervous then. More excited now. We were pretty physical this spring. I thought they handled it well.
“Now it's a move to the weight room for the summer to get bigger, faster, stronger.”
In addition to weight and agility work, Roberts said there might be walk through of plays “to make sure they understand what we put in.”
He declined to single out any players for praise. “I hate to say this player did great when somebody else's feelings might be hurt.”
The first day for MHSAA schools to begin practice is Aug. 5. Choctaw County opens the season with a home game against Independence Aug. 23.
