STARKVILLE – Despite a strong effort by Grant Bontrager, Grace Christian dropped its final baseball game of the season, 2-1 to Starkville Christian, to finish 7-5.
“The season went well,” said coach Ralph Goss. “We had a few games I thought we should have won that we just didn't play well. Other than that, it was a good season.”
Bontrager had a homer and two singles and pitched five innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs, with eight strikeouts. Ale Taylor struck out three straight batters in the the sixth.
Bontrager led the Eagles in batting with a .500 average, two doubles, two triples and two homers. He was also the leading pitcher with a 1.38 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 20 innings.
Taylor batted .407 and had a 2.88 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 28 innings. Justin Mast batted .464.
The team had three seniors, Bontrager, Taylor and Kyle Borntrager.
Goss is stepping down after 10 years as Grace Christian coach. He is a member of the Winston County Board of Supervisors.
The school is also currently without a boys basketball coach.
