On each third Thursday, Mr. and Mrs. Al Tuck have already contacted a guest speaker and made arrangements for door prizes for Center Grove Baptist Church’s Sonshine Club meetings.
On April 19, they were fortunate to find one person to do the job of two for the meeting, which a large crowd attended.
The guest at the meeting, after a large potluck lunch, was Donnie Buckner, a lifelong resident of the community and a member of a family of bluegrass and gospel music performers. Buckner and his wife, Jeanette, can be found many weekends playing and singing at many area churches for memorials and for regular services.
On this day, Jeanette was on her job and could not make the meeting with Donnie. However, this did not stop those attending from hearing her also, as Donnie has a music box he sometimes uses, and it had her singing with him in parts of songs.
Donnie played and sang many older songs, and had the crowd singing with him in no time, and even had many words of encouragement for all there.
After the program of music, before dismissing until next month, the regular drawing was held for the door prizes. It was interesting that the Rev Randle Poss, a member of the group, retired preacher and avid Ole Miss fan, was the winner of the last prize — a Mississippi State cap.
Some in the crowd might have been wondering if he would wear it, but being as good-natured as he is, he did wear it. Now, did he wait until he got home and yell, “Hotty Toddy?”
