This past Thursday morning Honor Students, Mississippi Scholars and Techmasters from all Winston County high schools were treated to a ‘Salute to Success’ breakfast at Lake Tiak O’Khata which was sponsored by the Louisville Bankers Association, Winston Medical Center and Winston Partnership.
There are rigorous requirements to achieve the title of Mississippi including: four credits each of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, one Art credit and two Advanced Electives. Additional requirements are: 40 hours of community or volunteer service during high school; composite score of 16 on the ACT; 2.5 cumulative GPA; 95% school attendance during the four years of high school; and no out-of-school suspensions.
Tech Master requirements include: four credits of English, three each of Math, Science and Social Studies, one credit of computer, one-half credit of Health or PE, 2.5 electives in a particular course of study, and an additional four CTE credits in the same course of study. Additional requirements are: 40 hours of community or volunteer service during high school pilot year, minimum of 18 ACT composite score (overall score) or minimum 36 ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Test) or, Silver Level WorkKeys, 2.5 high school GPA, 95% school attendance during high school years and no out-of school suspensions.
The graduates heard briefly from MaKinsie Clark, a 2017 Mississippi Scholar, who congratulated them on the hard work that they have put in to reach this pinnacle, and encouraged them to continue along the path they are one.
Guest Speaker, Matt Hillyer, Director of Engineering at Taylor Machine Works, spoke to the graduates about taking advantage of opportunities that are placed before them. Hillyer gave a brief history of the company, beginning with its founding in 1927 by W.A. Taylor, Sr., as a small automotive and repair business, which has since grown into an international business.
The breakfast was attended by local and county officials, school officials and business leaders.
