100 Years Ago – October 31, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Cleve Wood, on Oct. 25th a ten-pound boy. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Haggard, a fine girl on the 20th. - Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle carried their little son James to Newton to have his tonsils removed. - Mrs. Leslie, who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs. Lee, for several weeks left for Carrolton Monday to the bedside of her daughter who is very ill. - Mr. Lester Sharp returned last week from Oklahoma, where he has been on an extended visit, having been called to Calera by the death of his brother, William C. Sharp. - Mr. H. C. Stutts of Sheffield, Ala. this week purchased the farm of Mr. W. A. Strong, located one and a half miles east of the city and expects to move there by the first of the year. This is one of the most desirable farms in the community.
DEATHS: Carlton Carter, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Carter, died in a Meridan hospital Sunday and was brought home and buried at Calvary Monday. He was taken to Meridian for an appendicitis operation but doctors were unable to save him. He is survived by his parents, sisters and brothers. - Mr. Walker, 96, Confederate soldier of the 2nd Arkansas Infantry and a citizen of our county for about eight years, the last two spent in the Poor House with his wife, died there Tuesday and was buried at the Baptist cemetary. His burial was looked after by several of the old Vets. He leaves a 93 years-old widow. - Hon. Emmitt Cavett, 72, one of the best-known men of the State, died at his home in Noxubee county last Saturday. He was one of the most devoted Vets in the south and a good man.
MARRIAGES: A marriage of interest of many in Noxapater was consummated Sunday, Oct. 25th, when Miss Ethel Reynolds of McCool became the bride of Mr. Wafford Price. The wedding occurred at the home of the groom’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Price, Rev. G. W. Gordon officiating.
NOXAPATER: Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Kilpatrick’s family has been brightened by the arrival of a girl on the 28th. - Mr. Wilkins and family of Meridian recently became new residents of our town. - Mr. Williamson of Texas and Miss Sallie Creekmoore of Minter City were guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Reed the past week.- Mrs. Jake Kastleman received a message from her aged mother of Cro Kow Ostera, Germany, giving the good news that she and the family had survived the four years of war and is now able to obtain food and clothing to sustain them in comfort. - Maj. James A Harris of Wills Point, Texas made a short visit with relatives here the past week, returning home Friday. - Prof. and Mrs. Thos. Brand are receiving congratulations upon the arrival of a fine son Oct. 28th.
75 Years Ago – November 3, 1944
DEATHS: Funeral service for Mr. Dan M. Stone, 76, were conducted at McGee Cemetery Oct. 22. Mr. Stone had suffered for a long time and died at his home near Zama on Oct. 21st. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, five sons, two brothers, one sister, and 33 grandchildren. The Superintendent of Bond School, Clay Stone, is one of the sons. - Services were held for Charles A. Wilkes, 26, at Liberty Baptist Church Sunday, following his death at his home in the Mt. Pleasant community Friday night. He had returned from the hospital in Meridian where he received treatment, having been in poor health for several years. He was a son of Mr. John L. Wilkes and the late Nannie Boswell Wilkes and is also survived by four brothers and five sisters.
LOUISVILLE: Paul Chamberlin is doing much better after being quite seriously ill recently. - Jerry’s Flower Shop had an Open House Nov. 1st, to view the setting and seeing the latest and lovely arrangements. Jerry’s is the newest flower shop in town and we wish her well.
WEDDINGS: Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hinze of the Hinze community announce the marriage of their daughter Nola to Pfc. A. H. Wilkes, son of Mr. J. L and the late Mrs. Wilkes of Noxapater, Oct. 8th at Augusta, Georgia, at the home of the pastor, Rev. James Parker. - Mr. and Mrs. A. H. McCool of Noxapater announce the marriage of their youngest daughter Helen of Kannapolis, N. C. to Howard T. Poston, MC2/c, U. S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Poston of Mt. Ulla, N. C. The ceremony took place at Chester Field, S. C., Oct. 22nd. The groom has just recently returned from duty in England.
NOXAPATER: Mrs. Annie Allen of Calvary community spent the week visiting Mrs. Annie Dunn and family. - Capt. and Mrs. E. T. Bakewell are receiving congratulations on the birth of a winsome daughter at Harrison Hospital on the 27th. - Mrs. Annie Cagle returned to her Louisville home Wednesday after visiting here with her sister, Mrs. Hattie Morgan.
BIRTHS: At Pearson’s Clinic: Mr. and Mrs. Claude McCullouch are the proud parents of a fine son, Claude, Jr., born Oct. 26th. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Vivian Halfacre on Oct. 18, a baby boy named Johnny. - Born to the Tommy Lee Wylies, on Oct. 16, a son they have named Tommy Joe. - Mr. and Mrs. Henry Algood are the parents of a boy, Jerry Robert, born Oct. 12th. At Louisville Hospital: Mr. and Mrs. Flay Reed are the proud parents of a baby boy born Oct. 31. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Cockrell, a fine son on Oct. 27.
