100 Years Ago – September 12, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Dr. Montgomery gave us news of the birth of a fine girl at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Parker, and a boy at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Powers on the 9th inst. - We sympathize with Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bennett in the death of their infant, one day last week. - There is not a vacant house in our town, and at least a dozen applications in for houses to rent. - Joe Garrigues brings a family story, Riley Knoles one of the best black citizens of the county, had born unto him last week his 27th child. He now has 13 boys and 14 girls, a great majority of them living.
DEATHS: Mr. R. G. “Greer” Hamill died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. L. Hannah, in Oktibbeha county Sept. 7th, at the age of 86. His remains were interred in his old home church cemetery, Pleasant Hill in Winston county. He had resided with his son Will in this county until six weeks before his demise. Mr. Hamill was one of our county’s best citizens, having always lived a happy Christian life. He leaves one sister, Mrs. D. H. Suber, and six children and a number of grandchildren. - We sympathize with Mr. J. D. Haimes in the death of his oldest son Tom, who died at his home on West Main Street last Saturday after a brief illness. His remains were carried to Betheden for interment. One day last week he was taken with a severe case of appendicitis. He was brought home at once and all that local doctors could do was done for him, but so severe was his case that he could not be operated on, and death resulted. He was in his 23rd year.
MARRIAGES: On Sept. 6th, at the Methodist church, Miss Marion Davis, daughter of Mrs. Emma Davis of our city, and Mr. H. G. Langley were quietly married. Grady is a son of Mr. and Mrs. V. K. Langley. - Mr. Charlie Riley and Miss Nannie Lampley were united in marriage at the Methodist parsonage in Laurel on Sept. 7th. The groom is a son of Mrs. Ruth Riley and the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lampley of Noxapater. - Married at the Baptist Parsonage September 10th, Mr. L. C. Hight, known as Pete, and Miss Mabel Scrivner. The groom is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Hight and the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Scrivner, new citizens of our city. - At the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Carr near Indianola, Miss. on Aug. 31, Miss Bernice Carr and Mr. Jeff Aikin were quietly married.
75 Years Ago – September 15, 1944
DEATHS: Funeral services were held at Beulah Baptist Church, Choctaw County for Mrs. Lizzie Ward, 82, who died at the home of her nephew, W. F. McGee, in Shiloh. Formerly Miss Lizzie McKay, she married J. H. Ward in 1931. Aunt Lizzie was born in Winston county and spent the greater part of her life in the Shiloh area and church prior to her marriage. Her deeds of kindness will long be remembered. She is survived by one sister, many nieces and nephews, and stepchildren. - Services were held for Andrew Jackson Williams, 56, at Bevil Hill Methodist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. He died Sept. 2nd after a heart ailment lasting five months. A Winston native, he is survived by his wife, former Yona Kinard whom he married in January, four sisters and a brother. - William N. Lee passed away Sept. 8th, after suffering a stroke of apoplexy about two weeks earlier. Funeral services were held at Mashulaville Methodist church Sept. 10th with burial in the church cemetery. Born in Noxubee county July 16, 1887, he was married to the former Mary L. Sullivan for forty years.
LOUISVILLE: The many friends of Mrs. Clarence Browning are pleased to hear she is recovering following a recent illness. - Mrs. T. A. White left Wednesday for Manila, Ark. for a month’s visit with her son, Dan, and his family, and her sister, Mrs. Arnell Hutton.
WEDDINGS: Miss Christine Allbritton, daughter of Mrs. Lummie Allbritton, became the bride of Sgt. George Odum, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Odum of Starkville in a ceremony performed at the Meridian First Baptist Church June 18th. - Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Grey of Harrisburg, Ark. announce the marriage of their daughter Nellie to Pvt. Phillip L. Cunningham, son of Mr. and Mrs. V. H. Cunningham of Louisville, August 21, at the home of the Baptist pastor in Coldwater, Miss. - Mrs. Hermie Jones announces the marriage of her daughter, Carolyn, to Pvt. Ernest “Hot” Taylor of Macon, August 30 in the home of the bride’s mother.
NOXAPATER: Mrs. R. H. Ellis and children of Louisville were week end visitors with her mother, Mrs. Annie Dunn. - Mrs. Ollie King returned from Laurel, where she spent the summer visiting with her brother, Edwin Ellis and her sister, Mrs. Kirk McNeel and family.
BIRTHS: Pvt. and Mrs. H. F. Tucker are the proud parents of a fine son born Sept. 14, weighing 9 and a half pounds. - Mr. and Mrs. Dan Vickers are the happy parents of a baby daughter, born recently.
