100 Years Ago – August 29, 1919
MASS MEETING: We are requested by the old soldiers to urge the public to attend the mass meeting called here for next Monday Sept. 1st, at which time the matter of erecting a young and old soldiers’ monument in our county will be taken up and considered. This is a very worthy object and our people should rally to the cause. Come to the meeting in respect to the Ex-soldiers of both wars. Hon. R. C. Jones will deliver an address at the Court House on this occasion, and everyone should hear him. Mr. McGahey, President of the Columbus Marble Works will also be here on that day.
LOUISVILLE: Mr. R. F. M. Fulcher, one of our county’s oldest citizens and who is almost blind from old age, accomplished a deed the other day that few young men are able to do. He managed to spot and kill a large chicken hawk in his hen house, a thing he prizes very highly. - Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Barrett and interesting children, returned home Sunday after a pleasant visit to relatives in Shuqualak.
DEATHS: Mrs. E. B. Caperton, 48, died this morning at Kings Daughters Hospital, Hattiesburg, following a short illness. She will be buried Saturday from the family residence, 713 Edwards Street, Hattiesburg. Interment will take place in the City cemetery. Mrs. Caperton was the wife of former City Commissioner, E. G. Caperton, now a member of the firm of Caperton Brothers. She is survived by seven children. Both Mr. and Mrs. Caperton are natives of Winston county. She was a daughter of Mrs. C. C. Gunn of Noxapater. - Mr. Perry Edwards died at his home eight miles south of town last Friday night, August 22nd. He had been in failing health for a long time. He was a good man and neighbor and leaves many friends.
MARRIAGES: Saturday morning, August 18th, Mr. J. W. Vanlandingham of High Point and Miss Ruby Lee Horton were married, at the home of D. A. Lucius, who officiated. Miss Ruby is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Horton of Pleasant Hill.
NOXAPATER: Mrs. D. F. Luke and children visited relatives in Kemper the past week. - Dr. and Mrs. W. W. Hickman announce the arrival of a young physician at their home on Tuesday morning, August 19th, which accounts for the unusual smile the Doctor is wearing. - Mr. John M. Woods left Thursday for his home, New Harmony, Ind. after spending several months here with his son, Mr. C. M. Woods. - We are glad to see Capt. W. B. Duck on the streets again after a few weeks’ illness. - Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Hopkins are rejoiced over their fine son, Samuel Philip, who made his arrival on the 15th. - Miss Gertrude Yarbrough of Liberty was guest of her cousin Miss Gypsy Estes, the past week.
FAMILY REUNION: The children of Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Barnes, consisting of seven boys and four girls, who have been separated since 1908, all returned home last week for a family reunion, much to the delight of their aged mother. The time was most delightfully spent in a good old-time social way, with lots to eat, picture making, and a general good time. Four of the seven sons are returned volunteers in service of Uncle Same, two of which saw 18 months active service overseas.

FRONT PAGE: Pvt. Johnnie Morris Richardson, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Richardson, has been reported killed in action August 8th in New Guinea. - Lt. Walter Rogers, 29, was killed in action in France on August 6th, leaving a wife, the former Miss Karnese Dickerson, and a 3-year-old daughter.
LOUISVILLE: Ann McIntyre, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McIntyre of Marietta, Ga., arrived here last week to stay with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Blon Harris, and attend school here this fall. - Mrs. Joe Moody of Ellison Ridge was guest of her sister, Mrs. John Forbes this week. - Miss Dorothy Woodward returned home to Mobile after spending a lengthy visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shelby Woodward.
WEDDINGS: Mr. Clarence McAdory of Oak Grove and Miss Virginia Barnett of Macedonia were married last Saturday night in Noxapater.
NOXAPATER: Miss Floy Jean Barrett of Louisville visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. McBrayer Monday. - Mrs. Mary Frank Bryan and little son are visiting relatives at Pascagoula.
BIRTHS: Mr. and Mrs. Truman Calloway are rejoicing over the arrival of a new baby girl born August 23rd, the birthday of her grandfather, Rev. W. C. Kitchens. - Mr. and Mrs. Talmadge Hendricks are the proud parents of a fine baby girl.
