100 Years Ago – August 22, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Miss David Ione Callihan of Louisville is visiting her sister, Mrs. P. H. Woodward this week. - Mrs. R. F. Baker and little son Roy of Warren, Ark., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Baker and family and other relatives in the county. - Pvt. Wm. F. Shields returned a few days ago from France, having served with the Marines overseas for fourteen months. - Mrs. J. E. Roby and little son Fred are visiting Mrs. Roby’s parents in Crystal Springs this week. - Mrs. John Jordon and baby returned Sunday to their home in Greenville, after a week’s visit with her father, Mr. J. P. Cagle. - Mrs. Hugh Hathorn and Mrs. Otis Kinard are spending the week with their mother, Mrs. J. T. McLeod. - Mr. Hugh Hathorn left last week for Calhoun City, where he goes t take charge of the Fair Company’s Merchantile business at that place. - Judge and Mrs. Anderson and children of Vicksburg are visiting the former’s mother at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. McCreary.
DEATHS: Mr. A. M. Wells, one of our county’s oldest citizens, died at his home just over the line of Oktibbeha county August 15th, at the age of 85. He had a been a citizen of our county for many years until recently, having moved into the adjoining county. He leaves six children, four sons and two daughters. His remains were buried at Pleasant Hill cemetery.
BETHEDEN: Mrs. Will Ellard and baby of Attala county and Miss Margaret Crumpton and brother Joe Walter of Craig Springs visited their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Crumpton last week.
75 Years Ago – August 25, 1944
FRONT PAGE: The first cotton bales were ginned this week, one at Noxapater grown by C. C. Stanley and one at Louisville grown by D. H. Alexander. - Trent White, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. White, was killed in action in France July 16th.
DEATHS: Funeral services were held for Mrs. Carrie B. Davis, 77, at Louisville Baptist Church August 23rd, with burial in Masonic cemetery. She was the oldest child of the late Mr. J. Pink Cagle and Mrs. Jennie Cheatham Cagle, born in the Atlanta, Georgia area, and moved to Winston County when she was five. She was the wife of J. Frank Davis. Mrs. Davis had suffered from Bright’s disease for a number of years, and suffered a light stroke just before her death on August 22nd. She is survived by three daughters and four sons, two sisters, one brother, two half-sisters, three half-brothers, a step-mother, and twenty-four grandchildren. - Funeral services were held for 12-year-old Joe Billy Hurt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Hurt, at Ellison Ridge August 20th with burial in the church cemetery. He died after five days in Louisville hospital with a ruptured appendix August 19th.
A family reunion was held August 6th in honor of the 76th birthday of Mr. Frank Hisaw. All nine of his children and most of his grandchildren and great grandchildren were present, as well as many of his friends. His niece, Miss Emma Summerville of Greenwood was a week end guest, and Mrs. Henry Hisaw baked a cake with “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” in blue across it. The main cake for the occasion was made by grandson Estelle Hisaw and was an extra-large peanut cake. At noon the dinner was spread and enjoyed by all. A pleasant surprise was a cake sent by Mr. W. A. Tucker of Marks, arriving a few days late, and enjoyed by the family.
LOUISVILLE: Mrs. B. E. Stubbs is visiting her daughter, Mrs. M. B. Brown in Lexington this week. - Ned Peters of Memphis spent last week end with his mother, Mrs. Eunice Peters.
WEDDINGS: Miss Patricia Ann Parker and Mr. Harry W. Smith were married at Calvary Baptist Church, Harlingen, Texas, July 22nd. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Parker of Jackson, Tenn., and a granddaughter of the late Dr. J. W. Howard of Louisville. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Smith of Detroit, Michigan. - Miss Nannie Sue Price, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Price of Mt. Pisgah, and Cpl. Lawrence Onell Shepperd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Shepperd of near Noxapater, were married at the home of Rev. R. W. Ballard August 19. - Miss Mary Ruth Lovorn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lovorn, and Pfc. Joseph W. Wilson Moody, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Moody were joined in marriage by Rev. W. S. McAlilly of Greenwood at the Louisville Methodist Church last Saturday.
NOXAPATER: Mr. Haskell Webb of Forest spent the week end visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Webb. - Mrs. J. D. Land, Jr. and baby are visiting her sister, Mrs. Ruby Mae Coleman and family in Pascagoula.
BIRTHS: Lt. and Mrs. Paul Buchanan are the proud parents of a son, James Paul, born in Memphis August 3, weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces.
